The Surprise of Apple M1

大学生になった子供のPCに何を選ぶか、久しぶりに最新機種のパソコンを見た。Went through latest PCs for my kid going to start at university soon.

少々のプログラミングと、ウエブ、エクセルぐらいでは相当型落ちのマシンで全く問題ない。I do not really watch latest PCs usually since outdated machine is just good enough for simple programming, web browsing and Excel works. 

アップルのM1が出てきてからパソコン市場は嵐が起きている。Looks PC market is now in storm after the debut of Apple M1. 

アップルのM1は同一価格帯のインテルCPUより断然高速だ。Apple M1 is far fast than Intel of same price range. 

原因は、RISCとCISCにある。アップルのM1はイギリスのARM社開発のRISCチップ。The cause roots in RISC and CISC architecture. Apple M1 is a RISC chip developed by ARM corporation. 

一方、インテルのCPUはCISCだ。Meanwhile, Intel CPU is CISC. 

RISCは単純な命令を高速で処理する一方、CISCは複雑な命令を処理する。RISC can process simple instruction set very fast while CISC processes complex instructions. 

一見CISCの方が高速なように見えるが、OSやコンパイラを最適化することでRISCに軍配。It looks as if CISC can process faster overall however, RISC become faster after the optimization of OS and compilers. 

大昔、サンマイクロシステム社のSPARCというRISCのCPUが話題になったことがあった。In very old time, people talked about a lot on RISC CPU called SPARC developed by Sun Microsystems. 

屈辱的な状況にあるインテルが今後どう出るかは不明。Not sure how Intel will cope with this humiliating situation. 

現状、アップルM2とインテルi7-12世代が同程度の性能だが、i7-12世代の価格はM2の２倍で、性能価格比はアップルがインテルの２倍となる惨状。Currently, Apple M2 and Intel i7-12th generation have almost equivalent performance however, i7-12 costs double the M2 price. This makes Apple's cost performance two times attractive than Intel. 

一つ言えるのは、この状態が続くと、インテルからARMへの乗り換えは止まらなくなる。One thing that is clear is, if this situation continues, people will start rushing into ARM from Intel. 

ARMを買収した孫正義の先見性が光る。ソフトバンクも大丈夫だろう。Masayoshi Son's foresight was damn correct. Softbank will be all right in the end.
