コロナは「都市」の意義を問い直し、「都市」を再定義をする良い機会にもなってきている。テレワークが主流となると、もう人は都市に必ずしもしがみつく必要はない。Covid-19 gave us good opportunity to reconsider the reason for existence of CITY to redefine what that is. Once remote-work becomes popular, there is no need to stick to city anymore.
都市の魅力は高度な情報の集約性がもたらす効率性だ。すべての経済主体が揃い、直接相手と会っての交渉が可能だ。同時に都市には、インフラが整い、繁華街、商店、文化施設が集中し、人間の交流の場ともなっている。そして、都市の周辺には居住地区が広がる。The attraction of CITY is the efficiency from high concentration of information. All economic entities are there, and can make direct face to face negotiation. At the same time, CITY is well equipped with infrastructures, busy downtown, shops and cultural spots where we can also enjoy socialization and interactions.
これが、太古の昔から続く、大なり小なり同様な、都市の形だ。未来を予想するはずの、空想科学小説にも、ただ広大で複雑な都市が広がる未来が描かれ、読者も皆納得している。未来の都市はこうなるのだ、と。This is the typical picture of CITY more or less since very ancient times. Even in the science fiction, that is supposed to forecast future, just vast and complex cities are described and readers are well satisfied.
ところが、コロナはそんな平板な未来観を消し去ってしまうかもしれない。テレワークが究極まで進んだ果てには、都市の形はどうなるのだろうか？仕事が世界中どこでも可能だと分かった人たちは、一体どこで生活しようと思うのだろうか？However, Covid-19 may wipe away such plane-vanilla futuristic view. How then, the future CITY will look like after remote-work goes ultimate point. If people aware that his/her work can be done where-ever in the world. where those people wish to have living?
大雑把に考えて、東京のオフィスはどうしても人対人の接触が必要な業務を残して1/10ぐらいに減少するだろう。通勤が不要になった9割の人は、より自然の多い場所へ引っ越すかもしれないし、都市が好きで居続けるかもしれない。Very roughly, the office in Tokyo are will reduce to 1/10 leaving staff who really needs physical human interactions. There rest 90% of employee who no more need to commute, may move to more country side with nature, or may love to stay in the CITY.
コロナは災厄だが、それが通り過ぎた後には、多くの良い変化も起こりそうな気がしてならない。Covid-19 is a calamity however, after it passed away, many good things may happen, I feel.
