30年ほど前のことで、当時主流だったガイドブックLet's Go シリーズを手に、南米をバックパック旅行した。当時スマホはなく、危険情報は本と口コミに頼るしかなかった。It was 30yrs ago, I went up to South America for backpacking with popular guidebook Let's Go series in hand. There was no smart phone those days, hence risk information comes thourhg guidebook and verbal communication only.
バックパック旅行に、危機管理は絶対必要だ。Crisis management is a must for backpacking tour.
ここで、経験した事例の内、いくつかを紹介したい。Let me introduce couple of incidents I experienced.
ある有名な日系人街の小さなバックパッカーホテルで、朝、日本人の若い夫婦に会った。
ところが、夕方ホテルで再会してみると大変なことになっていた。日本の有名な海外旅行ガイドブックに紹介されていた日本の本屋への往路で、金品を奪われ、帰路でパスポートを奪われたということだった。実は、そのホテルと日本の本屋の間には有名な危険地域があったらしい。危険地域についての、現地での事前確認は必須だ。In the morning, I saw young Japanese couple in a small hotel for backpackers at one famous Japanese origin town. However they were in big trouble when I saw them again in the evening in the same hotel. They went down to a Japanese bookstore introduced in a famous Japanese foreign travel guidebook. And they were robbed valuables on the way up, and robbed passport on the way back. Looks like there was a famous dangerous zone in between the hotel and the Japanese bookstore. Danger zone is a must confirmation information to be checked as soon as you get to the site.
これも有名なある町で被害を受けたバックパッカーから聞いた話。その人が立ち話をしている間、うっかり、デイパックを歩道に置いた。気が付くと、デイパックは無くなっていた。デイパックにはパスポートが入っていて、途方に暮れた。貴重品の入ったバックパックは絶対に体から離さないというルールを守るべきだ。This is another story I heard from one backpacker who was caught in a problem in one famous city. While talking to a friend on the street, he mistakenly put his daypack on the pavement. The daypack has gone when he took 2nd look. The daypack had passport and he was at a loss totally. The golden rule is never leave the backpack from yourself.
ビーチで有名なある町のホテルの部屋に戻ると、フロントから電話。警官が来ているという。降りてみると、警官が小さな折りたたんだ紙を開いて見せる。中にはタバコらしきもモノの吸いかけがあり、それを私がタクシーから降りるときに落としたと言う。警官はこれは麻薬だと言いがかりをつけ、現金を要求しているらしい。私が20分ほど、日本はあなたの国に多大な経済援助をしており、私が本件を領事館に訴えたら、日本からの援助が停止され、結果、あなたは大変なことになるだろうと説明したところ、警官はニヤニヤしながら退散した。I went back to my hotel room in a town famous for beach and was called from front saying that a policeman wanted to see me. When I went down, the police man showed me a wrapped paper with a piece of cigarette inside, and told me that I dropped it when I got off taxi. The front desk person translated for me that the police officer was asking for money arrogating that the cigarette was actually a narcotics. I spent 20 minutes telling the police officer that Japan was making ton's of financial aids to his country, then if I appealed this incident to Japanese consulate, Japan might stop such aids, and he would be in a big problem. He eventually left the hotel grinning.

同じ町の他のバックパッカーの話だと、フランス人のグループは、バッグに麻薬を仕掛けられ、のちに警察から摘発を受けて大変なことになったようだ。セキュリティーレベルの低いバッグはたまに置いたままにすることがあるので気を付けたい。 According to another backpacker in the same town, one French group was setup narcotics in their bags and got inspected later by police. Obviously they went into a big problem. It is important to keep checking low security bags after you left them on the street for a while.
道行くバックパッカーはバックパックを金網で覆っていた。理由を聞いてみると、白昼ナイフでざっくり切られて中身を持ち去られるようだ。私自身は金網は付けなかったが、バックパックは全力で疾走して逃げられる重さにすることは気を付けた。I saw quite a few backpackers wrapped their backpack by wire mesh. They told me that robbers cutup backpacks by knives and steal valuables inside the bag. I did not have wire mesh myself but made sure that backpack is light enough for me to run in maximum speed even if I got into problem.

以上、30年前の話だが、今でも各所で起きていると思う。バックパック旅行は、他に替え難い素晴らしい体験だが、安全には十分気を付けたい。All above is a story happened 30yrs ago but I believe it is still happening everywhere. Backpacking travelling is a priceless experience for sure, but do need to exercise due care for the safety.
