カメは冬眠
Turtle in Hibernation
小学生の子供が友達からカメをもらってきた。冬眠させると見れなくなるのに、どうしても冬眠させると言う。友人宅では冬眠させていたらしい。Elementary school kid got a turtle from a friend. Looks like hibernation is a must for my kid since the friend did the same at home.
ネットで調べ、土と落ち葉を衣装ケースに入れる方法に決定。土を5cmぐらいと落ち葉を敷き詰める。ケースの蓋は空気のため隙間を開けてかぶせる。I googled and decided to use costume case with soil and fallen leaves. Laid 5cm thick soil and fallen leaves all over. Leave cover open slightly for air.
温度は０度以上に保つこと。これは、土と落ち葉の発酵熱で大丈夫みたい。寒い日にはケース内側が結露。Need to keep temperature above 0C. This can be achieved by fermentation heat of soil and fallen leaves. I saw condensation inside the case on cold day.
定期的に様子を確認し、調子が悪そうだったら中止する。Check up periodically to terminate hibernation anytime if turtle's condition is not good.
乾燥させない。定期的に霧吹き。Need to keep moisture. Spray water periodically.
気温は10Cを下回るようになると、落ち葉から出てこなくなった。Turtle stopped getting out of fallen leaves once temperature went down below 10C.
来春が楽しみ。Looking forward to seeing Turtle next spring again.

その後、３月中旬になって、気温が10-20度になったころ、カメを起こしたところ、無事冬眠から目覚めた。カメは落ち葉の下、半分土に埋まり、水没した状態で冬眠していた。知ってはいたものの、目の当たりにすると、その凄さを感じた。Later, in Mid March, when temperature became around 10-20 centigrade, we woke up the turtle successfully from hibernation. The turtle was half berried in soil and water under fallen leaves. We knew that already however, by actually watching it, we felt awe once more.
