Violin Chin Rest Replacement

高校生の子供がバイオリンのあご当てが小さい、というので、大きめのあご当てに交換した。交換前のあご当てはこんな感じ。Replaced chin rest of a violin to bigger one upon my high school kid's request. The chin rest before the replacement is as below.

1.5mmのレンチ（100均）で締め具を緩める。ネジが逆ねじに切られているのに注意して、緩まなかったら無理に回さず、方向を見極める。Loosen the binding screw by 1.5mm diameter wrench(100yen shop). Watch for the reverse screw, not to rotate to wrong direction but look for right direction, without pushing harder if does not go smooth to avoid breaking down the screws. 

取り外したあご当て。バイオリンに触れる部分にはパッドがなく、直接固定となっていた。あご当て底部にはレザー風のパッドが貼ってあった。Chin rest taken off. There is no cushion pad for binding metal that touches violin body direct. While chin rest bottom has leather like pad attached. 

Amazonであご当てと締め具のセット（高級黒檀 バイオリン あご当て 黒檀 チンレスト 標準ブラケット付き エボニーウッド製 4/4サイズバイオリン対応 バイオリンテールピース 13 × 7 ×6cm）を発見。508円。穴の位置・大きさが違うとか、金具が曲がってるなど、評価は最低だったが、自分で何とかできると思い、購入。Found chin rest and binding screw set in Amazon. JPY508. Review rating was bottom saying that hole size/location is wrong, binding bar is twisted, etc., but purchased since I thought I can take care of those problems myself. 

ただ、あまりの値段に最初来たものはネジ部分が目視で曲がっていて組み立て不能。返品し、再度同じものを購入すると、今度は大丈夫。However, due to its ultimate price, the 1st one delivered has bent screw that cannot be assembled. Hence I returned it and ordered the same one once more to find the 2nd delivery looked fine. 

また、締め具の２本の角度がかなりずれていたので、ラジオペンチ２本でネジを曲げないように気を付けて角度を調整。Nevertheless the angle of two binding screws were not in sync, hence using two radio pliers, I adjusted angles.  

色は、商品説明の黒ではない、茶色のグラデーションだが、許容範囲。Besides, color was not like ebony black as shown on the amazon, but looked more in brown gradation however, it was just acceptable. 

レンチで逆ねじに気を付けながら固定する。締め上げるとき、力が表・底版でなく、側板にかかるよう、ギリギリまで端にセット。また、締めすぎないようにレンチに加える力を注意。後で側板の上下に指で強い力を加えてみたが、かなりの強度を持っているようで、固定時の締め上げ力には耐えられそう。Fixed by wrench taking care of the reverse screw. When making final wrenching, put the chin head very near to the edge to avoid applying force to top/bottom but only on side. Also paid attention not to bind too much when binding by wrench. Later, I confirmed that side has rather big strength by pushing side plate from top/bottom by fingers, so I believe violin can stand the force applied when I fixed the chin head. 

バイオリン本体に触れる金具と、あご当て部分に家具の足に使うフェルトを切って張り付けた。また、前後するが、あご当て部分の穴は大きめだったが、差し込むだけで、締め具の圧力で十分固定された。今後、もし外れた場合は、接着剤などで充填する予定。Note that I cut felt buffer for furniture legs and attached them on the bottom of chin rest as well as on the bottom of binding metal. Also note that holes on chin rest are bigger than the binding bar diameter but just by sticking them in, the chin rest was fixed sufficient by the binding force. Going forward, if chin rest goes part from violin body by any chance, I may use chemical glue to fill in the holes. 

横から見ると、本体とあご当てはほぼ平行になっていることがわかる。From side, can confirm that body and chin rest are going almost parallel. 

子供が１時間ぐらい弾いてチェック完了。Kid played one hour for check and found all looked fine.
